In a dramatic turn of events, airport emergency crews in Antigua found themselves in the spotlight as they tackled not one, but two emergency landings within a mere 12-hour span—a true test of their skills and readiness!

The second incident of the day involved an Air Canada Airbus A319, carrying 120 passengers who held their breath as the aircraft reported mechanical issues

Following precautionary fuel-dumping maneuvers, the Toronto-bound flight executed a flawless landing at VC Bird International Airport.

As the skilled team of emergency responders sprang into action, a sigh of relief echoed at 10:48 PM when the all-clear was given. All passengers were confirmed safe.

Earlier that day, at 10:57 AM, a cargo adventure unfolded when an Amerijet Boeing 767 encountered issues and had to make an emergency landing.

Against all odds, the crew managed to land the freighter without a hitch, proving the resilience and expertise of airline operations and those on the ground in Antigua.

Despite the day’s challenges, the successful responses highlight the critical importance of safety protocols and the unwavering commitment of the emergency teams—ensuring that the skies remain safe for all!

Fire Chief and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Vivian Parker

Parker praised those involved in the airport’s rapid emergency operations center, which involved collaboration among the police, fire brigade, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF), and the Red Cross.

The Ameriject aircraft for example, was carrying over 5,000 pounds of jet fuel, making the situation particularly critical.

Parker emphasized the importance of assembling the emergency teams quickly, as the potential for a catastrophic event loomed if anything had gone wrong during the landing. He expressed his satisfaction with the agencies’ immediate and effective response.

Parker explained that VC Bird International Airport’s longer runway provided a safer environment for managing such emergencies.
