Two years after the controversial 2020 US election, former president Donald Trump is still calling for the annulment of the election. However, in a never expected post on Truth Social, the former president called for the termination of some of the country’s rules, including some in the constitution, and accused big tech companies of working closely with the Democratic Party.

“Do you throw the Presidential Election Results of 2020 OUT and declare the RIGHTFUL WINNER, or do you have a NEW ELECTION? A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution…Our great ‘Founders’ did not want, and would not condone False & Fraudulent Elections!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Despite criticisms over his stance on the outcome of the 2020 election, Trump has refused to shift his ground, as he continues to insist that the election was rigged in favour of incumbent president Biden and the Democratic party. He has not publicly condemned the January 6 riot after most of his allies and former colleagues, including his former deputy Mike Pence expressed disappointment over what has become known as the January 6 riot.

Last month, Trump declared to run for the country’s top job in 2024. Some of his supporters had wished that he would drop his election denial. To their disappointment, he had even gone further to promise a presidential pardon for the rioters that invaded the Capitol should he be elected president in 2024.

The Whitehouse kicks

Soon after Trump’s statement, the Whitehouse replied to the former president, describing the American Constitution as the pillar of the country’s politics and a document that guarantees the freedom of Americans.

“The American Constitution is a sacrosanct document that for over 200 years has guaranteed that freedom and the rule of law prevail in our great country. The Constitution brings the American people together – regardless of party – and elected leaders swear to uphold it,” Andrew Bates, deputy press secretary of the Whitehouse said.

“Attacking the Constitution and all it stands for is anathema to the soul of our nation, and should be universally condemned. You cannot only love America when you win,” the statement added.

Fellow Republicans distance themselves from Trump

Donald Trump’s election denial and his actions as leader of the Republican party have created enemies for him within his party and the opposition Democratic party. Among those who were first to criticise Donald Trump for his comments was Liz Cheney, house representative for Wyoming and Deputy Chair of the January 6 committee.

Cheney said: “Donald Trump believes we should terminate “all rules, regulations and articles, even those found in the Constitution” to overturn the 2020 election. That was his view on 1/6 and remains his view today. No honest person can now deny that Trump is an enemy of the Constitution.”

Cheney has won the hearts of moderate Republicans and Democrats for standing up to the leader of her party. She recently lost the nomination of her party, and many had attributed her loss to her constant criticism of Trump.

Another Republican that had challenged Trump on his recent comment is former National Security adviser John Bolton. He said he would be willing to run for president should the party ignore the remarks of the former president and insisted that if Trump wins the 2024 election, his oath of office could not be trusted.

“When you challenge the Constitution itself, that is un-American. If the current GOP presidential candidates don’t repudiate Trump, I’m prepared to get in the race,” Bolton said.

Trump says the media deliberately misquoted him

The man at the centre of the story, Donald Trump, has clarified his earlier statement on the country’s laws. He said the media had misquoted him and that he had not called for the termination of the constitution.

“The fake news is actually trying to convince the American people that I said I wanted to “terminate” the Constitution,” Trump wrote on Truth social. “What I said was that when there is “MASSIVE & WIDESPREAD FRAUD & DECEPTION,” as has been irrefutably proven in the 2020 Presidential Election, steps must be immediately taken to RIGHT THE WRONG.”

“Only FOOLS would disagree with that and accept stolen elections,” he added.

While many have kicked against Trump’s statement, others have supported his claims and insisted that the media is unfair to the former president. His ardent supporters believe the media fuels issues concerning Trump, especially in times of elections but tactfully suppress issues concerning other candidates.
