If you do not know something, you are often asked to “google it.” However, it appears that the substitution board has been raised and google is about to be replaced. A replacement that is not as efficient as the outgoing ‘knower of everything’ would not be accepted. Thankfully, this replacement is one that the world has never seen its type. It is called ChatGPT.
In a world where hundreds of millions are unemployed, the new technology, ChatGPT, could further increase the number of people without jobs. It has made complex jobs easy, and there is almost nothing it cannot provide an answer for.
What is ChatGPT?
OpenAi, an AI and research company, launched ChatGPT ON November 30, 2022. It is a natural language processor that allows you to have a human-like conversation with the chatbot. It can provide answers to almost every question, and assist in writing essays, emails, and codes.
Barely one week after its launch, the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, said it surpassed a million users. Studies have revealed it is the fastest-growing app of all time.
Earlier this month, the developers of ChatGPT came up with a more developed version of the software. Its ability to make complex jobs easy has impressed users of the technology. Users might not need to type documents as texts could be extracted by this new version. Just think of anything you could ask, and ChatGPT would provide an answer like it’s a human.
Experts are already worried about its impact on the labour market, saying that it could reduce the workload of workers in the United States and Europe by 25% to 50%. However, it poses less risk to physical jobs and more to administrative jobs.
Generative AI, a threat to administrative jobs
According to Goldman Sachs economists, in a recently conducted study, innovations like the ChatGPT could rob the labour market of about 300 million jobs in the coming years.
”If generative AI delivers on its promised capabilities, the labour market could face significant disruption, the report stated. It added that data obtained from the US and Europe show that “roughly two-thirds of current jobs are exposed to some degree of AI automation, and that generative AI could substitute up to one-fourth of current work.”
However, the fast-developing AI industry does not have a significant effect on every job. The most affected by the innovation are the administrative and legal sectors. The Goldman Sachs economist said that 44 per cent of legal jobs are at risk while 46 per cent of administrative jobs are at risk by AI.
The least-affected jobs by AI are those of manual labourers that require physical efforts like construction, maintenance, cleaning, installation, repair, and construction jobs. The study shows that about 4 per cent of maintenance could be affected by AI, while as little as 4 per cent of maintenance jobs are exposed to the innovations.
The economists predicted that the introduction of generative AI into the workplace might not necessarily lead to severe job losses, but will increase output and productivity if properly used.
“Although the impact of AI on the labour market is likely to be significant, most jobs and industries are only partially exposed to automation and are thus more likely to be complemented rather than substituted by AI,” the economists’ report added.
What are some of the complex things that ChatGPT has made easy?
GPT is a programmer
Computer programmers, whether professionals or amateurs, can make use of ChatGPT in their job. It has a simplified way of teaching and helping you debug your code. If you ask ChatGPT to check for bugs in a piece of code, it would go ahead to explain more than you asked for. It would explain what the bug is and suggest how best to fix it.
Learners can also get the best out of ChatGPT, as it is willing to teach them programming like it is nothing. If one is trying to write code for a particular problem, a chat with GPT-4 can teach you or even write it for you. Most programmers said they attempted using the innovation and are marvelled by how it makes coding looks easy.
GPT teaches teachers and students
ChatGPT is good for students and teachers. For students, it could provide any answer as long as it is on the internet. Interestingly, you could ask ChatGPT to explain to you in a particular manner. Tell it to explain to you like you are 4, and watch how a simplified explanation would come up. Hence, complex topics could be broken down to the understanding of the little ones if Chat GPT gets the right prompt.
Do you want it to explain with humour? ChatGPT can do that also. If you are trying to have some fun, you could specify the way you want the explanation, and it would always deliver a top-notch answer in the words you needed.
What about complex mathematical equations? With the correct question, ChatGPT is sure to give you a correct answer. If it was to write an exam, you can be sure that ChatGPT would get at least 90% of the questions right.
“I watched in awe as they asked GPT … 60 multiple-choice questions from the AP Bio exam—and it got 59 of them right.” Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, said concerning ChatGPT. “Then it wrote outstanding answers to six open-ended questions from the exam. We had an outside expert score the test, and GPT got a 5—the highest possible score, and the equivalent to getting an A or A+ in a college-level biology course.”
He added that GPT wrote a “thoughtful answer that was probably better than most of us in the room would have given” when asked what it would say to a father with a sick child.
“The whole experience was stunning,” Mr Gates continued. “I knew I had just seen the most important advance in technology since the graphical user interface.”
But there is even so much more it could do. However, it might be wrong to compare it with a human, as it has its limitations.
Less capable than humans but exhibits human-level performance
Upon the launch of GPT-4, the company said the innovation was “less capable than humans in many real-world scenarios, exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks.” What made it less capable than humans?
There are times ChatGPT could confidently give wrong answers. That happens because of the inability of the system to double-check its answers. Should it be a human, there would have been room for confirmation and double-checking.
The company said: “GPT-4 poses similar risks as previous models, such as generating harmful advice, buggy code, or inaccurate information.”
Although it is still far from perfection, ChatGPT is already the most advanced generative AI and the future looks scary for workers as it would not hesitate to take their jobs. Already, Microsoft and Google are already working on their versions of the same technology. No doubt, the words of Bill Gates in his recent notes are the best to describe the time we are living. “The era of AI is here.”
Thanks for this article.
ChatGPT is indeed amazing. It could even draw any description given to it.
It has been a great tool for me lately.
