Ukraine could be planning to change its fighting strategies in the war with Russia after the leaked Pentagon documents reveal some of its techniques and plans, CNN reported on Monday. 

An unnamed Ukrainian official close to President Volodymyr Zelensky told the news channel that the leak was frustrating to them as it exposed some of the military’s plans as they prepare for an offensive in the coming warm season.

A batch of secret documents was leaked and shared on social media, showing the depth of U.S. penetration of Russia’s military and how it also spies on allies. While Washington spies on Russia to provide information for Ukraine, it also spies on Ukraine before responding to its requests. The leaked intelligence report reveals some of the results of such spying on Ukraine. 

What was about Ukraine in the leaked documents?

Following the unauthorised release of the classified documents, the Ukrainian army truly has no other choice but to alter its initial military plans. What information is in the leaked documents that warrant that?

Some documents stated the training the US is providing for the Ukrainian forces and the equipment being provided for them. Also included in the documents is when the various Ukrainian units would be ready for the coming offensive. 

The leaked documents reveal why the United States has continually refused to provide Ukraine with long-range missile systems. 

Apart from spying on top military commanders in Ukraine, the United States was also spying on President Zelensky. The leaks reveal how President Zelensky suggested an attack on Russia’s deployment locations in Rostov Oblast, inside Russia, using “unmanned aerial vehicles.”

The US obtained this information through intercepted communications. Hence, its continuous refusal to provide Ukraine with long-range weapons for fear that it could strike inside Russia. Ukraine would have to alter some of these strategies and plans as they have become known to Russia following the unauthorised release of the documents. 

Investigations into who leaked the documents continue

So far, the United States Department of Justice has launched a criminal investigation into how the documents got out of their secret places. However, there is no known result of the investigation, at least for now.  

“The Department of Defense is working around the clock to look at the scope and scale of the distribution, the assessed impact, and our mitigation measures,” Chris Meagher, assistant to the secretary of defence for public affairs, stated on Monday. 

“We’re still investigating how this happened, as well as the scope of the issue. There have been steps to take a closer look at how this type of information is distributed and to whom. We’re also still trying to assess what might be out there,” the statement added. 

So far, the Pentagon has been careful about commenting on the authenticity of the information contained in them, but there are suggestions that there could be alterations in some parts.

Count us out, Russia says

Following the leak of the documents, fingers were quickly pointed at Russia by officials of the United States and top government officials in Ukraine. 

However, the Kremlin denied any involvement in the controversial leak of top secret documents from the United States, describing it as one of those false accusations against Russia. 

Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson of the Kremlin, in a telephone chat with journalists on Monday, said: “The tendency to always blame Russia for everything and blame everything on Russia is now a common disease.”

He, however, said it was interesting to know that the United States was also spying on its key allies and not just its foes. 

“The fact that the United States has long begun surveillance of various heads of state, especially of European capitals, has repeatedly surfaced and caused scandalous situations. Therefore, this cannot be ruled out,” Peskov added.
