Students in Guyana who survived the Mahdia Secondary School tragedy have been given the option to write their CXC exams in January 2024
The students according to reports are still traumatized by the fire, that claimed the lives of 20 children in Guyana
Minister of Education Priya Manickchand explained that some of the students already chose that option while other said they could sit the exams right away
“We offered the option of writing in January. Some students chose that option and some felt that they need to write it now. I think that was their way of reasserting their existence. We let it be completely a choice as we did with everything else with the students and their parents”, the minister said.
Saying, “Children who chose to write it now, we facilitated that with a caveat, but if after the results are out, and they want a second chance, they will get that, although we don’t usually do that in public schools.”
The government, according to her, is working to provide the best possible options for the students of Mahdia Secondary.
Some students according to the education minister are reluctant to return to school, saying that there seems to be hesitancy where that is concerned
The Ministry of Education is currently exploring alternative options for accommodating those students in a comfortable and safe manner.
