LIAT 1974 Ltd, has officially taken its final departure from the VC International Airport earlier today.
The regional airline carrier has been in administration since July 2020
The company’s government shareholders, including Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Barbados, and St Vincent and the Grenadines, have agreed to liquidate the company in 2022, leading to a bittersweet day for LIAT and its employees.
On its social media page, the airline expressed gratitude to the public for all the support it has received since its inception.
However, despite the efforts of the Antigua and Barbuda governments to revive the airline under a new name, LIAT 2020, with a tentative agreement in place with Nigerian airline Air Peace and its owner Allen Onyema, the airline’s future remains uncertain.
Last week, LIAT administrator Cleaveland Seaforth sent a letter to the company’s staff stating that effective February 4, 2024, all employees will be made redundant without payment, affecting more than 90 employees.
This letter has been met with criticism from the Antigua and Barbuda Worker’s Union.
