Whitney Williams, the owner of Stonewall Sound System escaped a lawsuit and publicly apologized to Elizabeth Makhoul, the Chairperson of the Antigua and Barbuda Festivals Commission.
This apology comes after Makhoul’s legal team demanded redress for what they deemed as defamatory statements posted on Williams’ WhatsApp Status.
This issue arose when lawyers representing Elizabeth Makhoul, sent a letter to Whitney Williams of Stonewall Sound System.
The letter called for an apology to be issued, warning of the potential for legal action otherwise.
It was alleged that Williams had made defamatory statements against Makhoul on his WhatsApp Status between August 9, 2024, and August 2024.
Reportedly, Williams had posted multiple statements about Makhoul along with an image of her in an Antigua Newsroom article titled “Technical difficulties at carnival shows blamed on service providers who over-extended themselves.”
The attorneys claimed that these statements were defamatory.
The attorneys demanded an apology within three days of service of this letter and that an apology be issued by way of publication via your WhatsApp Status in the following terms:
“l publicly apologize to Elizabeth Makhoul, Chairperson of the Antigua and Barbuda Festivals Commission, for the defamatory statements made concerning her, and I unequivocally state that I do not have any evidence or information that would tend to support my previous defamatory statements.
The lawyers demanded that the apology remain on Williams’s WhatsApp Status for 24 hours until the post expires.
Two screenshots of the published apology, with a difference in timestamp of at least 12 hours apart, must be emailed to the lawyers to confirm your compliance.
“Failure to comply with this request will leave us with no other choice but to commence legal proceedings against you”, the lawyers said
Williams did precisely what the attorneys representing Makhoul said
He wrote “l publicly apologize to Elizabeth Makhoul, Chairperson of the Antigua and Barbuda Festivals Commission, for the defamatory statements made concerning her, and I unequivocally state that I do not have any evidence or information that would tend to support my previous defamatory statements.
