Prime Minister Gaston Browne has confirmed that Sir Richie Richardson will join the government in some capacity to help ramp up sports investments.

Final discussions with Sir Richie will take place today, Monday, August 26, 2024.

Antigua.news was the first to report that Sir Richie would be appointed as a senator within the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party government.

Sir Richie Richardson, a former West Indies Captain and opening batsman, was one of the four knighted legendary players in Antigua and Barbuda.

He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) from the University of the West Indies on October 8, 2022, for his contributions to cricket. Additionally, he was inducted into the Cricket Hall of Fame on October 1, 2022.

Sir Richie captained the West Indies in 24 Tests between 1991 and 1995, winning 11 matches, losing six, with the remainder ending in draws.

He scored 5,949 runs in 86 Tests and 6,248 in 224 One Day International (ODI) matches. In January 2011, he was appointed as the West Indies’ team manager for a two-year period before becoming a member of the Elite Panel of Match Referees, appointed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on September 21, 2015.
