In a shocking twist of events, the Senate Minority Leader Shawn Nicholas has announced that today’s sitting of the Upper House will be her last.

The news left many in the Senate in shock, Independent Senator Kiz Johnson was left in tears.

Following her contribution, Senator Nicholas made the revelation.

“This is in fact my last sitting in this honorable house. It is not yet official but since I have the opportunity to do, I am doing it here and now. I have been in this house since 2013, which means I have been here for the last 11 and a half years. I know there is a senator that used to call himself senator for life, but I do not intend to be ascribed to such.

“It’s with mixed feelings that I say and bid farewell to this honorable house. I feel blessed, I feel honored and I was humbled so to do. I always said to people that it was never about me and I always say let it not be about you but let it be about service for the country and I repeat it here today. Let us take our appointment in this Senate seriously,” Nicholas said.

Nicholas was first appointed by former Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer in 2013.

She was reappointed by the Leader of the Opposition Jamale Pringle in 2018.

She thanked both men for showing their confidence in her and the United Progressive Party (UPP).

Nicholas mentioned that is her hope that her contributions positively impacted the nation especially where gender equity is concerned.

She confirmed her commitment to continue working behind the scenes on issues such was women in politics, gender equity and youth development.

She also thanked her family and close friends for their sterling support.
