The Upper of House of Parliament on Tuesday gave approval to two key pieces of legislations: the Magistrates Code of Procedures Amendment No.2 Bill 2024 and the Companies Amendment NO.2 Bill

The Magistrates Code of Procedure (Amendment) was introduced by newly-appointed Leader of Government Business Senator Shenella Govia and fully supported by the Minority Leader, Opposition Senator Shawn Nicholas.

Senator Govia stated, “We are bringing out bill in alignment with other OECS territories. As a national we believe in development and advancement and so I believe that this bill is indeed timely and it can only benefit us all”.

Senator Nicholas shared, “We can only but support it. So with those few words a simple amendment and on the opposition bench we stand in agreement and approval”.

Meanwhile, The Companies (Ammendment) NO. 2 Bill 2024 seeks to increase the period a director can serve on a board to 10 years with the option to serve a further term after a two-year gap.

During the two-year gap the directors would be able to serve on subsidiaries of the company. This is in an effort to give others an opportunity to serve.

Newly appointed Senator Michael Joseph also commented on the bill stating that companies will get the opportunity to rotate personnel’s.

Both bills will not need the Governor General’s assent before it becomes law.
