Former Resort Worker Admits to Fraudulent Online Shopping Spree

A Bathlodge woman has pleaded guilty to unauthorized use of a co-worker’s bank card, revealing an elaborate online shopping scheme that netted her over $4,000 in merchandise.

Angel James, who was working as a bartender at the Royalton Antigua resort, is accused of exploiting an opportunity in May 2021 when a colleague left his wallet unattended in the office. She allegedly recorded the card information and proceeded to make numerous unauthorized online purchases.

The victim first discovered something was amiss when he noticed irregular transactions in his bank account. After investigating with his bank, he filed a police report, leading to a search warrant executed at James’s home.

During the investigation, law enforcement recovered an extensive list of fraudulently purchased items. The shopping spree included clothing, shoes, rope, handcuffs, a first aid kit, handbags, craft boxes, and more than 30 additional items from online retailers Shein and Amazon.

James was arraigned in the High Court last week and admitted to obtaining goods by unauthorized use of a debit card.

The court has ordered a social impact report, with sentencing scheduled for January 15, 2025.
