Hotelier calls for tighter safety arrangements at Devil’s Bridge following drowning

Major hotelier Rob Barrett

Major hotelier Rob Barette has expressed condolences to the family of a Canadian man who drowned at Devil’s Bridge on Saturday

The 68-year-old man and his family arrived in Antigua on April 3 and were staying at the Pineapple Beach Hotel. They were due to leave on April 10th

Barrette said what happened was a “tremendous tragedy”, calling for tighter safety arrangements at Devils Bridge.

The Police at Willikies say the man’s body was fished from the water by members of the Antigua and Barbuda Defense Force Coast Guard and taken to the Coast Guard Base.

Meanwhile Head of the Antigua and Barbuda Defense Force Commander Dorian Davis is advising resident, especially in this Easter season to be cautious.

“We are advising persons to be vigilant, to be cautious as they go to the beaches and areas like the Devils Bridge. They need to be mindful of the areas, mindful of their surroundings, avoid drinking and swimming, avoid swimming alone…please pay close attention to small children,” he said

The Kite Festival is being held at the Devils Bridge and the EMS said at least two units and medics are on standby in case of emergencies.
