An eight-year-old boy in Suriname was killed after he was struck by lightning on Thursday, according to reports.

Police in Suriname said he was struck during a thunderstorm. At the time the child was at the sportcentrum located on Marowijnestraat, Paramaribo

When the lightning struck the boy fell to the ground. Bystanders attempted to resuscitate the boy but their efforts were unsuccessful. A doctor pronounced the boy dead shortly after the incident.

Investigations are ongoing.

Lightning is a major cause of storm-related deaths in the U.S. 

Medical experts say a lightning strike can result in a cardiac arrest appear to have a delayed death a few days later if they are resuscitated but have suffered irreversible brain damage.
