The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) has issued a warning to countries in the Caribbean, including Antigua and Barbuda, regarding the Saharan dust plume that is covering many parts of the region.
The agency has urged people to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the adverse health effects of the dust.
As per the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH), the Saharan dust is likely to exceed the outdoor air quality guidelines established by the World Health Organization (WHO).
CARPHA’s Executive Director, Dr Joy St John, has emphasized that the dust can be hazardous, particularly for small children, older adults, and people with underlying lung conditions and chronic cardiopulmonary diseases.
It can also aggravate health symptoms of those who have asthma, allergies, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
CARPHA has recommended measures such as staying indoors as much as possible, using HEPA filters indoors, wearing a dust mask when outside, and carrying medications for pulmonary conditions at all times.
In case of breathing difficulties, immediate medical attention should be sought, while antihistamines and steroid nasal sprays could help alleviate less severe symptoms.
