Dr Cleon Athill

The former United Progressive Party Caretaker for the St Paul’s constituency, Dr Cleon Athill, has revealed some shocking details about her treatment within the party that led to her resignation.

In her resignation letter, she disclosed that her unique style of politics and campaigning did not sit well with the UPP.

What’s more shocking is that she refused to accept food vouchers and financial gifts to distribute in her constituency, as she wasn’t about that type of politics.

“We went out into the community, and we engaged differently, too. We engaged people around the issues and the vision, we engaged people on things that were important to them and we pulled them into that whole process of campaigning…The Athill campaign was a positive campaign, it was a different campaign and I think that kind of made many people uneasy because we are so accustomed to the transactional politics,” she added

She said during an interview with Twin Island Media that this decision made her a target of certain individuals within the party, and things were never the same after that.

“I think from that very onset when I refused to do that is when I saw the midturn on Cleon”

To add to the shock, Dr Athill also revealed that she had to skip executive meetings after the general elections to maintain her mental health.

“I was not taking part at the level of the central executive. I attended other public meetings, but I haven’t attended executive meetings for my mental health. I chose not to go. This place had become to me….”

These revelations are certainly alarming and raise questions about the internal politics of the UPP.

During the interview, Dr Athill was asked about her potential involvement in Antigua and Barbuda’s political scene.

In response, she made it very clear that she has no intention of joining the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party ranks or running as an Independent Candidate.

While she is passionate about the country and its people, she has no desire to pursue a political career at this time.

    Mental health comes first.

not easy to be in the same space with the likes of Man Cow, Rag-Tag-Puppet or Limpy Joe. You are right to prioritize your health.
