Sir James Carlisle, a former Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda, has recently presented his autobiography titled ‘A Life Shaped by Extraordinary Circumstances’ to Prime Minister Gaston Browne.
The book chronicles his journey from his humble beginnings in Bolans, his pursuit of higher learning in the UK, his service in the Royal Air Force, to his decision to study as a doctor specializing in dentistry, and his eventual appointment as Governor General of the country following the death of Sir Wilfred Jacobs.
Sir James, accompanied by his wife Lady Emma, expressed to the Prime Minister that he wrote the book to leave his footprints in the sand of time.
He recalled a time when a reporter came to Government House and queried about Sir Wilfred Jacobs, saying that they knew nothing about him.
Sir James did not want that to happen to him and hence decided to document his life’s work.
Despite having mobility issues, he felt that it was important to visit the Prime Minister in person to present his book.
PM Browne acknowledged Sir James’ many years of service to the people of Antigua and Barbuda and thanked him for the gift of the book.
He expressed his hope that other officials who have made significant contributions would follow the example set by Sir James to write their respective stories.
He further added that documenting one’s life’s work was essential to avoid leaving interpretations to others or having them made the subject of political spin.
Both Sir James and the Prime Minister called on young people in the country to look past their current circumstances and to set themselves lofty goals and to strive to achieve them.
Sir James’ time in office was exemplary work and an honor that he brought to the office, according to the Prime Minister.
