The Guyana police announced on Saturday that they are currently investigating a double murder case, which is believed to have been committed by an escaped prisoner named Akeem Wong.
The victims have been identified as David Gomes, a 49-year-old taxi driver, and his mother, Elizabeth ‘Nellie’ Gomes, aged 75.
According to the police statement, the incident occurred while Gomes, his mother, and his six-year-old son were cleaning their house and the surrounding area. Wong allegedly approached the house and asked for food and directions.
The six-year-old, who witnessed the incident, informed the police that Wong was given food and spent some time with the family at the location.
The child also stated that he later saw the suspect arming himself with a cutlass and repeatedly attacking his father.
The boy’s grandmother attempted to intervene but was also severely injured. During the altercation, Gomes managed to inflict injuries on Wong as well. Subsequently, Wong tried to wash away the blood but reportedly fled into nearby bushes upon hearing a boat approaching.
The child mentioned that after the incident, he used his father’s cellphone to send a voice message to one of his father’s friends. It is worth noting that Wong, who had been serving a 15-year sentence for rape, escaped from the Mazaruni Prison in Region Seven on February 14.
Crime scene technicians thoroughly processed and photographed the scene, revealing that Gomes and his mother had sustained multiple chop wounds all over their bodies, with their heads being particularly targeted.
