On Thursday April 11th, the Five Islands Campus of the prestigious University of the West Indies (UWI) hosted its first-ever job fair, which turned out to be a resounding success.
The event provided an excellent opportunity for the students to interact with leading local and regional companies and explore exciting career possibilities.
The Pro Vice-Chancellor and Campus Principal, Professor C. Justin Robinson, extended a warm welcome to the representatives of the participating companies, which included Grant Thornton, BDO, Sandals, APUA, State Insurance Limited, The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, Anjo’s, ACT, and Epicurean Ltd.
In his opening address, Professor Robinson laid emphasis on the significance of building robust partnerships between academia and industry.
He expressed his confidence that the job fair would create meaningful connections and valuable career pathways for the students of the Five Islands Campus. Furthermore, he reaffirmed the campus’s commitment to nurturing relationships with the corporate sector in areas such as research and development.
The students engaged in lively discussions with the representatives of the participating companies and gained insights into their company cultures.
They also explored the various internship and employment opportunities that were available.
The students had the chance to present their cover letters and resumes to the recruiters of different companies and sign up for summer internships.
Assistant Registrar for Student Support and Success, Jenifer Hughes, acknowledged the excellent turnout of students for the event.
She pointed out that the job fair was a result of the collaboration between the Student Support and Success Unit and the School of Business and Management.
The event was also the culmination of the World of Work Programme, which was hosted by the unit in Semester Two (II).
The Five Islands Campus of the UWI remains committed to empowering its students and bridging the gap between education and employment. The success of the first-ever job fair underscores the campus’s dedication to fostering a vibrant and dynamic learning environment for citizens of Antigua and Barbuda and the wider OECS region.
