Jamal Pringle, who was elected as the new leader of the United Progressive Party on Sunday, says his win was not surprising.
In a closely contested election, Pringle emerged victorious by securing 237 votes, while his opponent, MP Richard Lewis, received 173 votes.
Although some of his colleagues did not support his bid for leadership, Pringle said he remained calm and decided against any campaign for the best interest of the party
“I made the decision early that I was not going to engage in any form of campaign that would bring disrepute to the organization. I said to myself I am not even going to campaign and allow the process to take its course and whatever the outcome, I will just line up with the decision,” he said
Pringle succeeded Harold Lovell, who retired last year.
The two were the only contenders for the position, and much anticipation led up to the results day.
The election results were eagerly awaited, especially after several opposition MPs expressed their support for Lewis in a letter that was leaked to the media last month.
Other positions were up for election besides the political leader. D Gisele Isaac was elected the new chair of the party, while Jason Mannix became the new deputy chairman.
Shawn Nicholas was elected as the new general secretary, and Jewel Brodie as the assistant general secretary.
Leon George and Kem Warner were elected as the treasurer and assistant treasurer, respectively.
Damani Tabor was elected as the new public relations officer, while Jennifer Maynard became the new education officer.
Ashworth Azille was elected as the new labour relations officer, and George Wehner as the new mobilization officer. Rolston Paige became the new field officer, while Chris Jarvis became the new elections officer.
In addition to the above positions, there were also members-at-large elected to the UPP’s executive committee.
The members-at-large included Dr George Daniel, Desmond Charles, Etienne Charles, Charlesworth Tabor, Valerie Hodge, Chaku Symister, Jonathan Wehner, Dr Edmond Mansoor, Rudolph Davis, and Harold Lovell.
