Jahari Adams who confessed to possessing 309 grams of cannabis has been fined $9000.

He discovered with the controlled substance valued at $3090 in his Golden Grove residence in April.

He appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Dexter Wason yesterday who raised concerns about the drug legislation.

The Cannabis Act allows each household to cultivate four cannabis plants and permits individuals to possess up to 15 grams. However, ambiguity arises from the fact that four uprooted plants may still be considered as trees if not cured, the Magistrate suggested.

Wason questioned whether individuals should harvest only 15 grams at a time, trim their plants to maintain this limit, or dispose of the excess

While expressing a preference for a more lenient approach, Wason also sought clarification on Adams’ case.

He inquired whether the discovered drugs were fresh and if there was evidence linking them to the plants. The investigator confirmed the absence of such evidence.

Consequently, Adams, aged 27, was fined $9000. He is required to settle the fine within 30 days, failing which he could face up to 90 days in prison.
