Residents have been reacting to a promise by Prime Minister Gaston Browne to increase wages for public sector workers in coming years
Browne revealed over the weekend that his ABLP administration plans to increase the wages of public sector workers significantly over the next two to three years.
“This would be a good thing. We welcome the move” one public servant said on social media after the announcement
The announcement came as part of a broader discussion on economic expansion and public welfare initiatives, highlighting the importance of improving worker conditions and supporting the country’s growing economic landscape.
He made the remarks on Saturday during his Browne and Browne weekly radio show
“I am committing that within the next two to three years we will give another increase. They got one this year and we will give another increase before the end of this term,” he said
The Prime Minister emphasized his administration’s commitment to boosting the economy and creating more lucrative opportunities for the workforce so that citizens and residents can enjoy second-to-none living standards.
“Some public sector workers are paid so little that they can hardly afford a proper home. PM Thank you. We await the increase because it is much needed,” another wrote
Browne expressed his concerns regarding the lack of advocacy within the hotel sector, an area he sees as crucial for economic growth, and urged local unions to advocate more aggressively for better compensation for hotel workers.
Browne stressed the importance of fair wage distribution, ensuring that the benefits of economic growth are equitably shared among workers.
He also reassured that the planned wage increases are designed to be sustainable and non-inflationary, with a focus on finding a balance that benefits everyone.
In addition to the wage increases for public sector workers, the Prime Minister also committed to another increase in the minimum wage in the future.
The administration’s objective according to the prime minister is to ensure that hotel workers and all public servants enjoy pay that allows them to afford basic necessities like a mortgage and a car loan, setting a standard of living that matches the country’s growing economic landscape.
