The ICC Cricket World Cup West Indies Bill of 2024 has been passed in the Upper House of Parliament.
This Bill is one that makes provisions for the efficient and effective staging of the event.
Leader of Government Business Senator Samantha Marshall says the this legislation will operate and manage the whole process up till June 30 when the Bill is set to expire.
She reference how important hosting such an event is to the country’s tourism product.
“It is important that we embrace opportunities like this, the reason being that tourism is not just coming to see the beaches, but if we do not remain relevant as to great opportunities within the tourism sector were fooling ourselves”, she told the Senate.
Meanwhile, United Progressive Party Senator Shawn Nicholas says her party stands in support of the Bill adding, “Its not a Bill that we can say that we will not pass because the World Cup is a very important event not just for us in Antigua and Barbuda but for the Caribbean on a whole.”
Independent senator Kez Johnson also threw her support behind the Bill.
“It gives me great please that the brand called Antigua and Barbuda will be represented all around the world through the hosting of this event”, she said in the Senate.
The ICC World Cup will be held in the Caribbean from June 1 to 30.
The teams utilize the Coolidge Cricket grounds and the Antigua Recreation Grounds as practice venues while matches will be held at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
