The Foreign Affairs Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, E.P Chet Greene, recently described the historic occasion when the flags of Antigua and Barbuda and the United Nations were simultaneously raised at the American University of Antigua (AUA).
This marks the first time that Antigua and Barbuda is hosting the Fourth International Conference of Small Island Developing States (SIDS4), a major UN-associated conference. The AUA is providing its facilities for this event, including a new conference center where the plenary sessions will be held.
Minister Greene emphasized the significance of this event, stating that it marks the beginning of a transformative and life-changing event for the government and people of Antigua and Barbuda.
The ceremonial handing over of the flag to the United Nations signifies the start of an opportunity for participants to set a new course that will protect against the threats of an uncertain future.
The Conference Secretary-General, H.E. LI Junhua, emphasized the symbolism of raising the United Nations flag, stating that it represents peace, unity, and hope for a brighter future. He also commended Prime Minister Gaston Browne and the government and people of Antigua and Barbuda for guiding the preparations for the conference.
Despite heavy rainfall, the flag-raising ceremony proceeded as planned, with both flags raised and music provided by the Antigua and Barbuda Defense Force Band.
