Insiders within the Police Force have expressed apprehension that the Asian businesswoman accused of defrauding a China-based investor may be allowed to leave the country due to political interference.

The woman, who stands accused of misappropriating assets worth $28 million, including land, has allegedly attempted to flee the country since news of the court case emerged.

According to these sources, the woman’s attempt to leave was thwarted by the Police, who have imposed a no-fly order on her at the airport. However, given her alleged well-connected status, those investigating the matter fear that the ban on the Chinese woman’s travel may be lifted by political authorities.

In addition to holding a regular Antigua and Barbuda passport, valid until September 28, the woman is alleged to be an economic envoy and possess a diplomatic passport as well.

Consequently, the sources state that investigators hope this travel document, which carries a certain degree of immunity, will be revoked or at least restricted until the investigation concludes.

If the accused manages to leave the country and fails to return, it will make it even more challenging for the investor she allegedly defrauded to gain ownership of the properties she reportedly registered in her own name. Interestingly, one of these properties claimed by the investor is currently rented by a government department.

According to documents supporting the investor’s claim, the Government has either not paid any rent or has paid it directly to the accused woman, as the investor has received no payment for its use.
