Director of the Environment Diann Black Layne
Air condition units are to be installed in at least 10 government schools and Director of the Environment Diann Black Layne is hoping the process can be completed by the start of the next school year.
“The AC units for the school is, we have a project that has promised air conditioning for only 10 government schools. That is it, 10 government schools. So we at the department are working with the Ministry of Education to see if we can get additional AC units for the schools. So that is very promising and we are working on that right now.”
The installation process involves re-engineering the schools’ infrastructure, including performing electrical upgrades.
“We have to conduct an assessment of the schools to ensure that once we install them, that everything is fine. So to do that we have to make sure that their classrooms are insulated. They make sure that the wiring is okay. And also check to make sure that APUA can provide the load that is needed for the increased load to the schools. So all of those questions have not been answered as yet.
The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has given the department a 60-day deadline.
