On Saturday afternoon, June 29, 2024, a minor seismic event occurred in the waters northeast of Antigua and Barbuda. The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC) recorded the earthquake at 1:10 pm local time, measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale.
The tremor’s epicenter was pinpointed approximately 205 kilometers north of St. John’s, Antigua, at 18.96N latitude and 61.84W longitude. Seismologists noted that the quake originated at a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface.
While some Antiguan residents reported experiencing light tremors, no immediate damage or injuries have been recorded. Both the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services and the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) are vigilantly monitoring the situation.
UWI-SRC experts emphasize that such minor earthquakes are not uncommon in the Caribbean, given the region’s proximity to tectonic plate boundaries. They urge the public to stay informed and prepared for potential seismic activities.
Local authorities are encouraging citizens to review their earthquake preparedness strategies and to promptly report any significant observations or damages to emergency services.
As analysis of the event continues, the UWI-SRC may provide updated information. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of earthquake readiness in the region.
