Hurricane Beryl has caused significant damage in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, resulting in at least one reported death. Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves announced the fatality and warned that there may be more.

The Southern Grenadine islands, especially Union Island, Canouan, and Mayreau, have suffered severe devastation.

Ninety percent of buildings on Union Island are either severely damaged or destroyed. Communication with first responders in Canouan and Mayreau is difficult, making the situation there unclear.

Despite the destruction, the Prime Minister expressed gratitude that many lives and homes were spared.

He aims to start the reconstruction effort as soon as it’s safe for first responders to begin clearing roadways and restoring power to cut-off communities.

While most public services are expected to resume tomorrow, the Prime Minister acknowledged that many public servants may face challenges, such as damaged homes.

He urged the private sector to open and asked employers to understand that their staff may have difficulties fulfilling their duties.
