Anthony Smith has been warned to expect criticism after he decided to leave the United Progressive Party and take on a ministerial role.
In response to Smith’s move, Prime Minister Gaston Browne reassured him of his support and encouragement, acknowledging that there would be ridicule but emphasizing that it would pass.
“I certainly commend you for your courageous position. There will certainly be detractors. They will be ridiculed. But that, too, shall pass. So, I ask you to remain courageous, to focus on the task that we have given you to empower farmers, and let us understand the importance of farmers”, Browne said
Following his departure, Smith is currently facing significant backlash from his former colleagues, with some expressing shock and disappointment, including callers on radio talk shows.
Despite the negativity, the leader of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party offered Smith reassurance, emphasizing the importance of his role in empowering farmers and highlighting the significance of agriculture.
He urged Smith to contribute respect and support to the farming community, recognizing their pivotal role in ensuring food security and a prosperous future.
Ultimately, Smith was entrusted with a critical responsibility and was wished success and enduring performance in his new ministerial and parliamentary role, with the assurance of full support from the party.
