A 36-year-old man has been handed a 17-year prison sentence for raping his ex-girlfriend. The conviction, reached in April, was for one of two rape charges brought against him.

The assault occurred on July 22, 2019, approximately a month after the couple’s six-month relationship had ended. According to court testimony, the incident began when the perpetrator contacted the victim from an unknown number, claiming he had something to give her.

Believing she would receive repayment of a $30,000 loan, the victim agreed to meet him before work. Upon entering his rented car with tinted windows, she was forced to surrender her phone.

The assailant drove her to an isolated area in Bendals, where he physically assaulted her, accusing her of seeing someone else. Despite her denials, he proceeded to punch and choke her before sexually assaulting her against her will.

The court found the man guilty of this specific incident, resulting in the 17-year imprisonment sentence.
