On July 16, 2024, starting at 12:45 am local time, the Seismic Research Centre (SRC) recorded a series of volcanic earthquakes beneath northern Dominica. While some of these seismic events were felt by residents, they remained below magnitude 3.5, which is under the threshold for public alerts on the SRC’s social media platforms.
As of 7:30 am local time, the SRC had documented 345 earthquakes in this sequence. The frequency of these events has since decreased, indicating a potential waning of the swarm activity.
The SRC continues to closely monitor the situation and is in regular communication with Dominica’s Office of Disaster Management (ODM), providing timely updates on the seismic activity.
It’s important to note that the UWI-SRC and the ODM are the official sources for information regarding volcanic activity in Dominica. Residents and interested parties are advised to rely on these authorities for accurate and up-to-date information about the ongoing seismic events.
While the current activity does not pose an immediate threat, the situation underscores the importance of ongoing geological monitoring in the volcanically active Caribbean region.
