Police Commissioner Atlee Rodney

The United Progressive Party’s Women’s Forum is calling for Police Commissioner Atlee Rodney to explain and apologize for a recent incident involving a senior police officer.

This demand comes after a video surfaced showing a plainclothes police officer forcefully pushing an intoxicated female patron to the ground at the Rise fete.

The Women’s Forum acknowledged the revelry during Carnival in Antigua and Barbuda often leads to excessive behavior, but emphasized that law enforcement should be well-equipped to handle individuals affected by alcohol and other substances at such events.

The organization expressed concern that the mishandling of the woman in question only adds to women’s vulnerability, especially in light of unsolved break-ins, rapes, and robberies.

The Women’s Forum is urging Commissioner Rodney to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and make the findings public, and Rodney has confirmed that a probe is already underway.

He also condemned the actions of the police, saying on Tuesday that while investigations continue, this is not how matters of such should be handled

Rodney said he awaits the full investigation in order to decide on the way forward
