The Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party is expected to appoint Former West Indies Cricketer Richie Richardson as a Senator.

Sir Richie will also be appointed the new Minister of Sports, a position currently held by Daryll Matthew.

He will take over from Senator Marie Clare Hurst, who is expected to step down for personal reasons.

Sir Richie, famous for his illustrious cricket career as a West Indies international cricketer and former captain, is expected to take on a new role in the political arena.

Known for his flamboyant batting style and fearless approach against fast bowlers, Sir Richie stood out and was honored as one of Wisden’s Cricketers of the Year in 1992.

One of four knighted former cricketers in Antigua and Barbuda, Sir Richie captained the West Indies in 24 Tests between 1991 and 1995, winning 11, losing six, and ending the rest in draws.

The Antiguan scored 5,949 runs in 86 Tests and 6,248 in 224 One Day International (ODI) matches.

Additionally, the University of the West Indies (UWI) conferred upon him an honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) for his contribution to sport.

  2. Good news for those students whose recently published CXC results were below expectations. Grab a cricket bat and practice, practice, practice. In short order you can be fast tracked to positions way above your gloating classmate who might be at this time basking in the fifteen or more CXC subjects passed. The next ten or so years of blood, sweat and tears that you will invest to become a doctor, lawyer, engineer, professor etc, may now seem like a waste-of-time route if you have a cricket bat lying around somewhere. Pick it up and begin to practice, practice, practice.! In shirt order you can be addressed as His Excellency, Doctor, Sir, and Honorable….. So, let’s raise a bat for His Excellency, Doctor, the Honorable, Sir Richie Richardson!
