Seven earthquakes were recorded northeast of Antigua over the weekend

5 September 2024 - 11:27

Over the past weekend, a series of seismic events have drawn the attention of local authorities. Seven earthquakes were detected in the waters northeast of Antigua.

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Seismic Research Centre reported that these tremors occurred within a concentrated area, approximately 89 to 91 kilometers (55 to 57 miles) off the island’s northeastern coast.

The quakes varied in intensity, with the most significant registering at a magnitude of 4.2. Although this was the strongest event in the sequence, residents of Antigua and Barbuda did not report feeling it.

While earthquakes of this magnitude are not unusual in the Caribbean region, the clustering of multiple events in such a short time frame and localized area is worthy of note.

Seismologists at the UWI Seismic Research Centre are closely monitoring the situation for any potential follow-up activity.
