Government May Intervene to Expedite Reopening of Cancer Centre Eastern Caribbean

By Aabigayle McIntosh

Prime Minister Gaston Browne indicated during Tuesday’s parliamentary session that the government may need to intervene further to fast-track the reopening of the Cancer Centre Eastern Caribbean.

Responding to questions from the Opposition, Browne revealed that delays in reopening stem from ongoing negotiations between the former owner, Dr. Conville Brown, and the new buyers, primarily concerning equipment at the facility.

“My understanding is that they will be meeting this week with the receiver and the attorney representing the owners, and we are hoping for a quick resolution,” Browne stated.

He added that if the issue remains unresolved, the government may have to compulsorily acquire the equipment to ensure the facility reopens promptly, restoring cancer treatment services to the people of Antigua and Barbuda.

The cancer center was sold earlier this year to a North American health entity for $13 million, with veteran surgeon Sir Dr. Joseph ‘Joey’ John as part of the purchasing group.
