Region urged to brace for more severe weather

The Barbados-based Caribbean Climate Outlook Forum (CARICOF) is urging Caribbean nations to brace for increased tropical cyclones and severe weather over the next three months.

This warning comes in the wake of 2024’s climate extremes, highlighted by the record-breaking Category 5 Hurricane Beryl, widespread flooding, and relentless heatwaves.

In its latest Caribbean Climate Outlook report, released on Monday, CARICOF emphasized that these extreme conditions cannot be overstated.

The report also notes the potential transition to La Niña in the equatorial Pacific, alongside the likelihood of near-record warm temperatures in the tropical North Atlantic.

La Niña is a climate phenomenon characterized by the cooling of surface ocean waters along the tropical west coast of South America.

  2. What severe weather for three months? I thought we have two more months before the hurricane seasons ended in November 2024.
