Burton-Nibbs International Airport provides new career opportunities
By Makeida Antonio
The Barbuda International Airport – to be renamed the Burton-Nibbs International Airport – was officially opened following a ceremony on the sister island this morning.
Hundreds of Antiguans and Barbudans including government officials, ministers, senators, residents and well-wishers gathered to observe the historic event.
The facility under the control of the Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority boasts a 6,100 ft runway that is equipped to accommodate both commercial and private international flights.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne discussed some challenges faced in re-developing the airport including the aftermath of Hurricane Irma and the COVID-19 period.
“We have fought long and hard for several years. We have had to stand our ground to advance Barbuda. What we are seeking to do is position Barbuda as a luxury destination.”
Prime Minister Browne also announced that over 30 million dollars in funding secured from the Caribbean Development Bank will be repurposed to develop roads in Barbuda.
Additional funds from taxes collected from PLH will be used to further develop the road infrastructure on the sister isle.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Barbuda Affairs E.P. Chet Greene forecasted a surge in demand for car rentals, water sports, clubs, bars, restaurants and other tourist-related activities.
“The opening marks the commitment and dedication into the restoration of a self-sustaining, resilient island that can serve an influx of visitors, economic growth and investment opportunities for locals to realize the island’s true potential for tourism.”
Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Charles ‘Max’ Fernandez believed that “This new airport is a shining restatement to the visionary leadership of PM Browne and the Cabinet. Despite Barbuda’s small size we have taken strides to develop Barbuda. We have already started discussions for American Airlines to land in Barbuda.”
New ABBA Chief Operations Officer Judith Harris delivered a historical perspective to highlight the significance of upgrading the Barbuda Airport to international standards.
“Today we have transitioned the Codrington Airport to having immigration, customs, police, fire and emergency services. I am indeed very proud of this new beginning which is beyond the imagination of some.”
Project President (PLH) Justin Wilshaw encouraged residents to seek the new opportunities available from the airport’s completion.
“This is not about a bunch of foreigners coming in, this is Barbuda-made. Barbuda continues to deliver achievements. Without our 50 local contractors, this would not have been possible, thank you.”
The expanded 50 million XCD airport has a weather station and a state-of-the-art fire station that will create at least 25 new careers. It was also estimated that 10 percent of the Barbuda working population would be employed at the airport.
Seven immigration officers were trained and transferred to Barbuda to facilitate travel from the island.
Well done, ABLP. Promise made, promise kept. Meanwhile the hangers-on on the other side are huddled in a corner, counting their bruises and losses, concoction yet another diabolical scheme to deny Barbudans and Antiguans an opportunity to create a better life for themselves and their children. Time to see them for what they are. Run them!
Well well well
ABLP kept their promise well well
