New BIA: A Game Changer for Barbuda

Tourism officials assert that the newly inaugurated Barbuda International Airport represents a transformative development for Barbuda, with Charles Fernandez, the country’s tourism minister, emphasizing its potential to enhance the nation’s already impressive tourism performance.

During the airport’s opening ceremony, Fernandez highlighted that this project reflects the forward-thinking leadership of the administration led by Gaston Browne.

“We have undertaken significant initiatives to modernize this island, ensuring that its air connectivity is unparalleled in the region,” he stated.

The new airport facilitates direct air travel, and for the first time, Barbuda is set to welcome 23 luxury cruise ship arrivals, bringing approximately 5,039 cruise passengers to the island during the forthcoming winter cruise season.

The $14 million Barbuda International Airport features a 6,100-foot runway, which is considerably longer than the 1,640-foot runway at Codrington Airport and is also twice as wide, allowing it to accommodate larger aircraft.

It is equipped to handle private jets and aircraft such as the Embraer E-170. The airport includes a comprehensive LED runway lighting system, enabling regular night landings.

A 600-foot parking apron is available to accommodate multiple private jets, further enhancing Barbuda’s status as a luxury destination.

Moreover, a modern Fixed Base Operator (FBO) terminal has been established to serve high-end travelers.

In the first eight months of 2024, stay-over tourism air arrivals in Antigua and Barbuda have increased by 17%, totaling 229,225 visitors.

The government has also announced plans for further expansion of the airport, which is conveniently located just a 10-minute drive from Codrington village.

The new airport now provides direct connections to international destinations, significantly improving the travel experience for both visitors and residents of the island.
