A $10 per day fee for the dispersal of garbage for business places in the city is a steal of a deal.
That’s according to Director of City Planning and Urban Renewal Saiid Greene.
The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) announced last week that it plans to reimplement that the fee starting 2025.
Joseph says the Authorities’ responsibility is for the collection of household waste, nonetheless, “the business in St. John’s just put the garbage out there” and as a potential health and safety risk, “the NSWMA has taken the responsibility to collect it, but it’s not our responsibility.”
The Cabinet in 2015, made a policy that there be a surcharge for the collection of waste collection and Joseph says the government has asked the NWSMA to roll that out from January where there’s going to be a $10 surcharge per day.
In response to that announcement Greene in a state media interview said, “I frankly believe that that is much too small.”
“Okay, at least we’re starting there. But business owners need to know that if they were responsible for disposing of their garbage, they could not pay any private individual $10. So we’re asking them to cooperate.
We’re appealing to them that the way they dispose of their garbage has to change. You cannot just throw your boxes out.
Greene says Solid Waste will also increase the amount of times waste is collected from these business places.
“So, pickup could be two or three times a day, so that you don’t see garbage spewing all over the city as is what is normal right now. That is unacceptable, and there will be a change in that,” Greene stated
That’s an extra $300 per month each business places will have to pay for a service that is already being paid for over 100 years, due to the exorbitant taxes and duties. This is another way of cheating people from the failed administration by Gaston Brown. The country is going down. There is no work and no business. Sham shame shame. We need a new government for sure. Antigua is a failed state.
Oh be quiet, Mr. Public, you’re on the wrong side. Did I hear you come to the rescue of the ordinary citizens of Antigu when these businesses arbitrarily jacked up prices to maintain their millions in profits? You must be one if them Then they, in their typical condescending attitude just toss their waste at a curb for already impoverished workers to pick up.
. The charge should be MUCH HIGHER!
