Liat 2020 continues to expand its regional footprint.
On Thursday, the airline made its inaugural call to St. Maarten, a territory in which Liat 1975 had on its flight itinerary for decades.
The flight left the VCBIA a little after midday and landed in Princess Juliana International airport 30 minutes later with media and dignitaries alike on board.
A brief ceremony was held to celebrate the historic occasion with dignitaries from St. Maarten and Antigua and Barbuda.
Chief Executive Officer of Princess Juliana International Brian Mingo not only welcomed everyone but also commended the airline for its great service during the flight.
He called on both countries to continue to work together for the best interest of all.
Liat 2020 Ltd. Chief Financial Officer Conley Ibrahim echoed his sentiments expressing gratitude for this new milestone thanking everyone who played a part in ensuring that this day became a reality.
He mentioned adding this stop is a step forward in their goal to connect Liat 2020 and the region once again.
Antiguan Ambassador Brian Challenger also had a few words.
“We are back, and we are here to stay. We look forward to working with our colleagues and we are very happy to be apart of this exciting experience,” Challenger said.
Another speaker St. Maarten Tourism Minister Grisha S. Heyliger-Marten was elated over the flight.
“It’s a great day. It’s always a great day when we can welcome back old friends. We also witnessed the rebirth of the beloved regional airline, like a phoenix rising from the airlines, coinciding with the upgrades of the airport.
“For St. Maarten this new flight brings tremendous benefits. So as we welcome Liat 2020 back to the island, we also reaffirm our commitment to regional travel. I extend my gratitude to the Liat 2020 team for making this day possible. Let us celebrate this new beginning and continue to build bridges,” he said.
This call follows that of Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados and St. Kitts and Nevis, staying true to the words of Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne who promised that Liat would take to the skies once again.
The phoenix continues to rise from the ashes and is expected to elevate even more with stops in the larger Caribbean territories like Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and Jamaica in the near future.
LIAT 2020, based in Antigua and Barbuda with majority government ownership, aims to enhance air travel in the Caribbean and provide reliable service for passengers and cargo.
