Deputy to the Governor General, Sir Clare Roberts, is calling on families and society to show more care and responsibility for the elderly.
He was speaking at the Independence Church service on Sunday, addressing an increase in cases of elderly individuals left at Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre and Clarevue Mental Hospital.
“While laws may require children to care for parents in need, there is a deeper, faith-rooted duty to treat our elders with respect and dignity, ensuring they feel valued and protected,” Sir Clare emphasized, referencing African cultural values that inspire such responsibilities.”
In addition to elder care, Sir Clare addressed the growing mental health challenges, especially among young people.
Citing a 2023 report from a national psychiatrist, he highlighted the increasing mental health struggles that are impacting families and communities. “Mental health care must become a key component of our collective efforts, fostering support systems that encourage healing and resilience,” he said.
Sir Clare urged the nation to reconnect through personal interactions rather than relying solely on screens, saying, “Let us dedicate time to person-to-person calls or face-to-face visits.”
In closing, he appealed to the public to show compassion not only toward the elderly but also toward those facing mental health issues, emphasizing the need for unity and community-driven solutions.
