Efforts to thwart reckless truck driving underway

Discussions are now underway to address the growing concern of reckless driving by heavy duty trucks.

According to Cabinet, the Attorney General was asked to consult with the Transport Board and the Royal Police Force (Traffic Department) to set time limits for use of the roadways by trucks pulling heavy loads, and to enforce the speed-limit laws that govern all vehicles, including trucks.

There has to be traffic regulations, and the police traffic department was certainly brought into the conversation… Clearly, there needs to be that conversation of what type of reinforcement law enforcement needs to put in place to ensure that this insidious practice is discontinued.

“One of the ways we may ultimately have to look at is to enact regulations or if the law does not permit it, we will have to amend the law to ensure that anyone who is licensed to port cargo that their rigs or trucks must be tagged with electronic surveillance so that we are able to monitor the speed and routes to which they travel…but we are certainly willing to empower the Port Manager and police force to bring this matter under control,” Cabinet Spokesperson Melford Nicholas said.

Recently, the number of traffic accidents involving trucks has been growing, even resulting in some deaths.

Concerns have been raised for some time by many drivers who have witnessed some of these truck drivers showing a disregard for the speed limit and other road rules.
