Antigua & Barbuda Progressive Society Brings Thanksgiving Cheer to Harlem Seniors

Continuing its tradition of giving back, the Antigua & Barbuda Progressive Society (ABPS) recently wrapped up its Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive with the distribution of 140 bags of groceries to seniors at the Bethany and Henry Brooks Senior Housing Centers in Harlem, New York.

SALT Foundation, an Antiguan and Barbudan nonprofit, led by Claudia Wheeler, is our major food contributor. We are also supported by corporate sponsors: Target,Trader Joe’s, Costco, Pioneer and Fine Fair supermarkets along with private donors.

“This small but mighty gesture lets seniors know they are not alone,” said ABPS President Mercelle Mason. “We want to remind them they are part of a caring community here in Harlem that values their well-being.”

The Thanksgiving Drive highlights ABPS’s broader mission to uplift underserved groups, foster social connections, and improve lives through financial, emotional, and spiritual support.

Founded in 1934 by 22 Antiguans led by Bishop James P. Roberts, ABPS is the oldest surviving organization of Antiguans and Barbudans. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit headquartered in Harlem, it has preserved its rich heritage while making meaningful contributions to the community for the past 90 years.
