A distressing maritime incident occurred when the Russian-flagged cargo ship ‘URSA Major’ sank approximately 40 miles off the coast of Cartagena (Murcia) today.
The vessel, which was operating under the Antiguan and Barbudan flag, met with disaster following a significant explosion in its engine room.
Rescue efforts were promptly initiated, leading to the transfer of 14 crew members to the Spanish city around midnight.
This commendable operation was facilitated by the ship Clara Campoamor, dispatched by Salvamento Marítimo, as reported by La Opinión de Murcia.
Meanwhile, the Red Cross sprang into action, mobilizing a team of healthcare personnel and psychosocial support experts to assist the rescued crew. Unfortunately, two crew members remain unaccounted for, leaving a total of 16 originally on board, according to the Cartagena Maritime Authority.
The emergency began with a radio beacon alert received at approximately 12:15 PM, signaling the site of the incident.
The nearby vessel, ‘Oslo Carrier III,’ was notified to investigate the situation. Upon approaching the Russian ship, the crew discovered the explosion and quickly coordinated the rescue operations.
As the situation developed, a Russian Navy vessel requested to assume control over the rescue operations. Consequently, responsibility for the ongoing efforts was transferred to them.
Adding to the support, the Spanish Navy patrol boat Serviola was also dispatched to the scene, ensuring readiness for any potential environmental spills and remaining on standby for further assistance.
The ‘URSA Major,’ having departed St. Petersburg 12 days earlier, was en route to Vladivostok, where it was scheduled to dock on January 22.
This general cargo ship, constructed in 2009, has been operational for 15 years, navigating under flags including that of Antigua and Barbuda.
Wow happy no one was hurt
That’s the 4th Russian ship to have sunk in those waters in the last 10days and according to international sources poor maintenance has a lot to do with it. The question is how come they are sailing under our flag ?? Are we in some sort of arrangement with the Russian government???
Is Stone an IDIOT?
Praise the lord the crew are safe
