The Barbuda Council has issued a stern warning to individuals clearing land for the Louie Hill Development to cease and desist. A January 14 letter from the Secretary of the Barbuda Council warns that the individual clearing the land is “trespassing on land allocated to Barbudans.”
Under the project, over 200 homes, a mall and other infrastructure will be constructed in the area.
However, cabinet has warned the Council that the Central Government exercises a fundamental right over crown land on both islands in the unitary state. It says this right has been reinforced by the country’s apex court, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.
Cabinet says as Barbuda develops, no one will be left behind and makes it clear that continued resistance by elements within the Barbuda Council will not be tolerated.
