Minister responsible for Information and Technology Melford Nicholas has told the Cabinet that Starlink, a prominent telecommunications provider operating in Antigua and Barbuda has not been paying taxes.
The firm, which utilizes innovative satellite technology to deliver its services, has reportedly been serving customers in the region without contributing to the local tax system.
Cabinet officials were informed that Starlink’s unique technology enables it to circumvent the traditional infrastructure used by other telecommunications companies, raising questions about regulatory compliance and tax obligations
The Minister emphasized the importance of ensuring that all companies, regardless of their operational model, contribute fairly to the nation’s revenue through the Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax (ABST).
In light of these findings, the Cabinet unanimously agreed to take decisive action aimed at recovering the taxes owed by the firm.
The government is committed to enforcing tax regulations and will employ every effort to ensure compliance from all telecommunications providers operating within its jurisdiction.
The discussion surrounding Starlink’s tax practices highlights the growing need for regulatory frameworks that account for advancements in technology and the changing landscape of the telecommunications industry.
