Cabinet is to consider requiring owners of cars to pay an increase of a flat $100 dollars per year to license their vehicles.

The announcement came Saturday afternoon from Prime minister, Hon. Gaston Browne on the Browne and Browne Show on Pointe FM.

He says there would be need for a determination of the cc-rating of the vehicles in this category.

The head of government, who is also finance minister, says efforts will also be made to cushion bus and taxi operators from significant increases, to prevent a hike in public transportation costs.

However, Prime Minister Browne says the proposed 40 per cent increase will apply to Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) as well as heavy-duty vehicles, such as trucks.

There has been a firestorm of public concerns since Thursday when the government had announced its proposal for a 40 per cent increase in vehicle licensing fees across the board.

However, Prime Minister Browne says his government values consultations with residents.

The matter will be discussed at cabinet next Wednesday, ahead of the next meeting of Parliament’s Lower House the following day.

So why do I have to pay more to maintain a road that all of us are using.
Why can’t it just be $100 across the board well except for trucks and heavy duty equipment

Gaston Browne you are an economist and you have to know that people are not working for enough money to manage the supermarket. Grocery bills are sky high. We need to strike a balance. Figure out a way around this mess you are now creating. Your population is already being squeezed. Don’t suffocate us. Remove your knee from our necks Alphanso Browne.

So many people making 30k a month and still drives government vehicles. Your port manager, these people make a killing. Yet you can sit here and expect we the poor to pay this money when we can hardly buy food. Gaston Browne come on man. Where is your heart? I understand these taxes won’t affect you but what about us? Where is the love you claim you have for us? Sir respectfully reconsider this. It could cost you another term.

When politician says there will be no new taxes it doesn’t mean they will not increase the present ones. I sure bet a lots of you are feeling deceived by this proposed increased in licensing fees.
I support a serious push back against this kind of behavior by politicians since it will caused serious economic hardship on majority of the population.
Charging for parking in the city can generate revenue and reduce congestion in St. John’s and other places
