Tertiary educational institutions in Antigua and Barbuda will soon fall under one body, following the passing of a new bill.

An act to establish The University of Antigua and Barbuda- College of Advanced Studies is to be brought to the Parliament when the body next meets on April 8.

It will bring together all the tertiary institutions that now have separate boards and management structures, to include the Antigua State College, Antigua and Barbuda International Institute of Technology, Antigua and Barbuda Hospitality Training Institute and the Harrison Center.

The news came in this week’s Cabinet notes and according to Chief of Staff in the Prime Minister’s Office Lionel Hurst the goal is to “reduce administrative costs and boost efficiency”.

“You still have to have a beauracy that manages these institutions, but the idea is to ensure that standards are adhered to and there is a body that the institutions can make representation and from which we believe we can find resources flowing in order to ensure that these institutions remain viable.

“It’s a multiprong approach,” Hurst explained.
