Rental car companies are now operating from a new air-conditioned facility at VC Bird International Airport following a $300,000 renovation by the Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority.

This upgraded space, previously used for regional airline counters, is situated next to the Old Terminal Building and can host up to fifteen locally owned rental companies, some of which are affiliated with well-known franchises.

Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez expressed his satisfaction with the new facility, highlighting that as tourist arrivals grow, so does the demand for rental vehicles.

He noted a shift in travel trends, with more visitors choosing to explore independently rather than being confined to resort properties.

This shift is supported by the increasing popularity of Airbnb rentals and private accommodations, diversifying the tourism landscape beyond the traditional all-inclusive model.

Officials also pointed to the recent partnership with Google Maps, making navigation easier for travelers.

ABIA Chairman Rolston Potter described the initiative as a significant advancement, moving from an unsafe curbside operation to a more appealing rental car facility. He emphasized the importance of creating jobs and wealth for local nationals through such collaborations.

New ABIA CEO Wendy Williams welcomed the facility’s opening as it enhances safety and comfort for customers, offering them the freedom to explore the island as they wish.

The ceremony included a ribbon-cutting event, attended by car rental operators and officials.

It’s good for business all around, as it creates more competition and potentially better service. Plus, having everything in one place can streamline traffic at the airport, making it easier for us taxi drivers too! Exciting developments for the island! Yep Yep. ANU to the world!

That’s definitely an upward progress long overdue but welcomed. No running up and down for the visitors, everything under one roof, professional

As a taxi operator serving for a very long time at d airport, I think it’s great to see the rental car companies getting a new space

The upgradezz is great and def make things easier for travelers looking for options. Although I have an issue with some things going on down dere…But on a positive front…with more locally-owned rental companies available, visitors can have a taste of what our island has to offer.

It’s a great initiative, but will there be enough cars available during peak seasons? Hopefully, the facility can handle the increased demand effectively. Just asking, be reminded that things like easter and carnival is coming up. there will be high demand for vehicle and Airbnb

As a local business owner, and the wife of a rental car operator. I’m thrilled to see this upgrade. The increase in rental car options and the new facility will definitely help attract more visitors to the island. Knowing that once you land there’s options for you to choose from. I see this bringing antigua to new levels
