Theft Incident Leads to Court Penalties for Two Female Shoplifters

7 March 2025 - 12:53

Two women faced legal consequences this week after being caught stealing merchandise valued at approximately $1,100 from Chinese-owned businesses on Redcliffe Street.

Tichelle James, 30, and Shania Knight, 22, were sentenced following their admission of shoplifting multiple clothing items from two stores on February 26. Their haul included footwear, clothing, and accessories.

The theft came to light when one store proprietor spotted merchandise visibly protruding from a bag as the women departed. The vigilant merchant followed the suspects to Redcliffe Quay, where all stolen items were successfully recovered before law enforcement was notified.

The defendants appeared before Magistrate Dane Hamilton on Monday to face larceny charges. Both women spent one night in His Majesty’s Prison before returning to court Tuesday for their sentencing hearing.

In his ruling, Magistrate Hamilton ordered James to pay a $500 fine, acknowledging that all merchandise had been recovered and that she had already served a night in custody. Knight received a different penalty, being placed on a two-year probation order.
