Over the weekend, Prime Minister Gaston Browne revealed that Independent Member of Parliament Anthony Smith will run in the next general elections under the banner of the Antigua Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP).
During his weekly radio programme on Saturday, Browne discussed Smith’s political trajectory, stating, “At the right time, comrade Smith will make the transition.”
Smith, who previously served as an Opposition MP for the United Progressive Party (UPP) in his constituency, left the party to become an Independent, citing significant differences with UPP’s leadership.
Prime Minister Browne praised Smith, characterizing him as “another young, bright talent” joining the ranks of the ABLP.
He joins a growing list of recent additions to the party, including Dwayne George, Michael Joseph, and Randy Baltimore.
This announcement is part of Browne’s vision for renewing the Labour Party by infusing it with younger candidates aimed at appealing to a broader voter base. The Prime Minister indicated that more candidate announcements would follow as the party finalizes its primary processes in the remaining constituencies.
As the political landscape shifts in Antigua and Barbuda, the ABLP’s strategy of integrating fresh, youthful talent may prove pivotal in the upcoming elections.
Well done Mr. Smith you didn’t stand a chance retaining your seat as an independent but I respect your courage for leaving what has been and what could have been.
While I personally have no objections whatsoever, I would encourage the Hon.Anthony Smith to just continue in what he is doing to the best of his abilities. Please don’t allow anyone – your former political colleagues or even the Hon.PM – to knock you off your crease. You seem to be a decent, simple, intelligent, hardworking young man committed to genuine progress and development. One

In life it’s always best to do what you gotta do if you believe it’s in your best interest. Pleasing people is never pleasing your self. If you are happy then be happy and I voted for you in the last election
